Derek Jarmans Blue Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Derek Jarmans Blue - Essay ExampleDiscovering he was HIV confirmative in 1986, it comes as no surprisal that Jarmans work passionately embraced the call of aid activism. Indeed, until his death from AIDS in 1994 a great amount of Jarmans visual and sound nontextual matter concerned the nature of homosexual identity and the need for increased attention to victims of this disease. musical composition Jarmans chaste production exhibits a considerable range of work, from pointedness design to writing and even conceptual pieces, its unquestionably his work in the use upic medium that has garnered him the most critical acclaim. While beginning with crude passing 8 mm films, Jarman progressed to more elaborate film art visions. In Sebastianne (1976) Jarman is credited with producing the first British film that depicted homosexuality from a positive perspective. In the 1980s Jarman increasingly turned his attentions to questions of homosexuality and AIDS activism. These themes and st yle continued until Jarman eventually experienced health concerns and began constructing more paired down works. It is in this context that Jarmans seminal film Blue was produced in 1993. During the time of its production Jarman was dying of AIDS and his sight was rapidly diminishing. The film itself consists of an entirely bluish screen with text and music interspersed in a stream of conscious like narrative format. Rowland Wymer has articulated the film as, The return to the suffering body - the down(p) screen representing not only an open door to the soul but in any case an after-image on the retina left by the shattering bright light of the specialists camerea - is also a return to politics. While the narrative contains ambiguity characteristic of Jarmans personal artistic approach, its clear the film exhibits a relationship between the motif of transcendence and AIDS activism. This essay considers Derek Jarmans Blue within this context, and attempts to situate it within the broader context of Queer theory, and the aural landscape of the relatively new field of sound art. abstract In great part one detects in Derek Jarmans Blue the interrelation between the form of the film and the underlining subtext of the films narrative and artistic intentions. Perhaps the most pervasive and overarching structural concerns one notes is exceptionalal nature of how the flow of life equals the stream of conscious flow of the narrative. In these regards one thinks of the transcendent in the Emersonian sense, as life is understood not as the singular entity of the individual, but rather as a universal oneness. This flows from Jarmans own brush with morality in the film and the impending questions all individuals with AIDS must face regarding their own transitory existence. While the film returns to a number of thematic tropes, it is this underlining subtext, namely the motif of transcendence and AIDS activism, that is perhaps most prevalent throughout Jarmans work in this film. As the film progresses these thematic concerns stepwise become articulated through a number of structural means. While the predominant emphasis is on the nature of sound and text, one must also consider Jarmans implementation of the blue background throughout the entirety of the film. Early in the film, one notes Jarmans direct discussion of the color blue. The film states, Blue is the universal love in which man bathes. It is the terrestrial paradise. The film then transitions to the narrator describing himself walking along the beach in which he hears the voices of groundless friends. Here the blue background represents the transcendence of the ocean and sounds of past friends. It functions as a testament to these individuals who perhaps died from AIDS, drawing attention to the

According to probability statistics, by the year 2015, 700 million individuals will be obese, and 2.3 billion people will be overweight this number includes both adolescent and adults (W orld Health Organization 60). The spread of the Western life-style usually defined as the consumption of attractive energy dense meals with undesirable composition, elevated consumption of animal fats and sugars and decreased or non- consumption of dietetical fiber, along with a lack of sufficient physical activity- is one of the principal origins of obesity and overweight problems in the Middle East (Roya 439).In as very much as there are great numbers of individuals in the US who are obese, it is not bizarre to see people working out to get in shape. In the US, most people take exercise seriously and they exercise extensively and religiously as opposed to people in the Middle East especially Saudi Arabia (Al-Hazzaa 663-670). The difference in culture could be the reason as to why people in the US work out as opposed to those in Saudi Arabia. A comparative analysis of three leading english grammars Essay

A comparative analysis of three leading english grammars - Essay ExampleMost languages in Europe start virtually form of codification to the extent that such a record carries authority among native users on its conventions. The study of the rules governing the usage of the side language is called side of meat grammar.Gowers Modern position Usage was once popularly ascribed to but not many, even leading linguists, have a copy of this text. It can be considered that English is not typical as far as European languages go. It is the worlds language, used by around 300 million second language speakers. It dominates the worlds communications and is taught in almost every school worldwide. It is also the only language whose second-language speakers or non-native users far outnumber the native speakers. It is also the only language which can leave millionaires out of its experts by writing books. The study of these rules may either be prescriptive or descriptive. prescriptive grammars set rules for language. In descriptive grammar, the manner by which the language is written or spoken is described. The English language is in some aspects quite simple. However, it can also be complex if not nettlesome in its other characteristics. For example, English does not make use of grammatical gender. Its plurals and tenses atomic number 18 mostly regular. However, a unique feature of the language is that it employs the use of modern tense (using -ing). This use of the progressive tense is unique although it is muted in its everyday use. This feature is a source of difficulty to some second-language speakers... The differences among the various grammars of English is somewhat well-defined. The characteristics of Standard English are relatively clear. Standard English is spoken by around 10% of the population in the United body politic (Trudgill ). It is usually derived through formal school contexts. Standard English can also be combined with various accents including reg ional ones. The differences between Standard and Non-standard are minimal. These differences often involve a small proportion of the words in a passage, affecting only around twenty percent of specific areas of grammar. Non-standard English has many regional variations. An example is the difference between dialects which suppress subject-verb agreement favoring the -s form. An example of this is He like it in Wales in contrast to He likes it in Wales. There are also few gray areas in the definition of Standard, and the uncertainties that arise are specific and often affect the spoken form. Differentiating Descriptive and Prescriptive EnglishThere are now several English grammars and they are often classified as either descriptive or prescriptive, although others may have elements of both. The two types of grammars vary in the principles of how they are written. The descriptive and prescriptive approaches to Standard English grammar is the subject of much debate. New trends are also arising which has affected the stylus English is taught and used. Among these trends is the increasing codification of Standard English among non-native speakers. Ironically, the language is not codified for native speakers. However, this codification of English among native speakers may in the future(a) become part of

Traditional Chinese History Essay Example for Free

tralatitious Chinese History EssayAbstract It is not a secret that the Chinese indite language is one of the most antiquated languages on the Earth planet. In fact, hieroglyphs are considered to be the most significant part of the traditional Chinese history and the most important signs of the Chinese civilization. In general, the Chinese language includes about 50 thousands of hieroglyphs, but only 5-8 thousands are practic all toldy used and as it is known about 3-4 thousands of hieroglyphs are enough for reading the modern literature. Also, it continues to unite many ethnic groups. But, why? It is a real interesting question Traditional Chinese History The Chinese written language is suggested to be an amazing phenomenon among the modern writing systems. It is important to know that other hieroglyphic languages, which took place in the Near East, South Asia, China, Central America disappeared spacious time ago and became just the objects of the ancient history. As to t he Chinese written language, it managed to adapt to all ever-changing conditions during the dogged development process of Chinese civilization and to become the most reasonable tool for writing in China in the end. According to the archeologic data, early history of the Chinese written language began from the inscriptions on the ceramic vessels of the Neolithic period of time. It should be pointed out that all inscriptions were elementary by their forms. It was unambiguous that the forms of inscriptions were changed depending on various Neolithic cultures of that time. At the same time, few simple signs, revealed on the vessels, were total for several cultures (Origins of Chinese writing, 2006, p.1). In fact, the historians consider these inscriptions as the ancient signs of the Chinese written language. The differences, which were demonstrated in graphical forms of signs, in some degree, could mean that each Neolithic culture had its own written language. The point is that, the circumscribed conditions (both graphical and technical) are required for creating the written language. For instance, the material on which various signs were cut had to have the special surface, which could correspond to the possibilities of the tool chosen for writing. In China, wish in the other civilization centers the first writing tool was some sharpened object, which could be used for cutting thin lines and therefore, the material had to possess patrician surface. Coming back to the history we can see that ceramic industry was very popular in China. So, Chinese craftsmen knew various ways of covering ornamentation and other images on the raw and burnt materials. Thats why both crude and burnt clay were regarded to be the most available material chosen for writing (p.1). It should be accentuated that the uncommonness of the Chinese written language continues to attract the attention of many specialists and amateurs. There is even the special literature, which describes this uncommonness in detail, but the scientific studying of its history began only at the end of the 19-th century after some ancient evidences of the Chinese written language were found. The discovery of the oracle mug up took place in China in1899, when a scholar from Peking was prescribed the special remedy, which had to contain so-called potassium hydrogen tartrate bones for his illness the fact is that dragon bones were widely used in Chinese medicine at that time and usually referred to fossils of dead animals. The scholar overly managed to notice several very interesting carvings that looked like some kind of writing language on the bones he acquired from the local pharmacy (p.1). People often have the characterisation that Chinese characters are extremely onerous to learn. In fact, if you were to attempt to learn how to write Chinese characters, you would find that they are not nearly as difficult as you may have imagined. And they certainly qualify as forming one of th e most fascinating, beautiful, logical, and scientifically constructed writing systems in the world (Chinese written language, 2006, p.1). Comparing with alphabetic language, hieroglyphic language has more difficult graphical expression of its symbols and includes several thousand signs. For example, the latest Chinese language includes about 50 thousand signs. No other famous hieroglyphic language had such a great number. This example demonstrates how many symbols hieroglyphic language can contain during a long period of time. The main feature of phonemic and syllabic written languages shows that the linguistic units themselves dont have the certain meaning. In fact, hieroglyphic writing demonstrates such important linguistic units as words and morphemes. In other words, it transmits the content plan of the certain linguistic units. It is clear that alphabetic writing is intended for some special state of one language. In other words, it cant be used by some other language witho ut some special changes. So that, the main feature of hieroglyphic writing is universality. As we can see, this splendid feature allowed the modern Chinese written language to unite many ethnic groups in a single whole (p.1). Theoretically, hieroglyphs can be used for writing by other languages. The history of the Chinese written language and a huge experience of applying hieroglyphs by Vietnamese and some Thai languages can prove the given fact.As the experience of applying the Chinese hieroglyphs by the Japanese and Korean languages showed the successful usage of hieroglyphs for agglutinant languages can be very successful and effective if the alphabetic writing is used at the same time. There is also another advantage of the Chinese written language each symbol is independent on its reading. The fact is that each symbol of hieroglyphic writing can be read differently depending on the number of languages, which are usually used by the given writing. So that, we can say the Chine se hieroglyphs have not only one meaning, in fact, it can be also read and understood by such languages as Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese. It should be also express that each hieroglyph has both the national meanings and many dialectical. At the same time, in the South China one hieroglyph can have deuce completely different meanings spoken and literary. As usual, the second meaning is widely used for reading written texts and pronouncing the scientific and cultural terms (Origins of Chinese writing, 2006, p.1). The emancipation from the real pronunciation of linguistic units allows hieroglyphic writing also to have some so-called timeless properties. It means that if a reader knows the grammatical structure of the language, so the text of hieroglyphic writing can be completely understood despite the date it was written and its symbols can be read by the help of any convenient way. It is known, that today, the ancient hieroglyphic texts can be differently understood by the help o f the national reading of hieroglyphs, any dialectic readings, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese readings despite the fact they could have another meaning at the moment of their creation. All these properties of the Chinese hieroglyphic writing played a very important role in the development of the Chinese national culture and history and allowed the Chinese written language to live so long in spite of all difficulties it had to face. In addition, due to its originality this language managed to become one of the most wide-spread languages among the people all over the World. Taking into consideration all these historical data we can come to the following conclusion the Chinese written language is considered to be a unique phenomenon among the other written languages, which also took place in the World history. So, it is unique hieroglyphic language which is very interesting for studying. Chinese is the only major writing system of the world that go along its pictograph-based develop ment without interruption, and that is still in general modern use (Chinese written language, 2006, p.1). Coming back to the history of the Chinese written language we can emphasize that the given hieroglyphic writing has managed to go through several stages of its development. Having made a great deal of attempts to change it reformers manage to make the Chinese written language more available for people. Nevertheless, the main principles and feature of the modern Chinese writing continue to be unchanged during several thousand years. So, thats why in order to understand the Chinese culture, the traditional Chinese history, the Chinese civilization and if it is possible the Chinese traditional ideology both the Chinese written language and its history should be studied in detail.ReferencesChinese written language.
